Mark King, a prospector who prefers the everlasting whisper of the pines to the roar of city streets, rescues Gloria Gaynor, a society heiress, when her horse runs away with her. Mark later protects Old Honeycutt from the scheming of Gratton, who wants to discover the location of Old Honeycutt's mine. Gratton tries to force Gloria into marriage, but Tom forestalls him by marrying Gloria himself. Gloria soon longs for city life and, resenting Mark for the abrupt manner of their marriage, returns to San Francisco. Gloria later realizes the depth of her love for Mark, and they are reunited under the whispering pines.
